Toward Vibrant & REsilient communities

Shared-Decision Making

Shared decision-making is at the core of the midwifery model of care. It is the responsibility of the midwife to provide you with information and to explain recommendations and options related to indicated screenings, tests, and treatments that will help you make informed decisions about these options.

This model is based on a philosophy that upholds the belief that each individual is an expert in their own values and preferences and that the right of each individual to make choices about their health must be upheld in the best interest of that individual.

At times, the decisions arrived at by a client may be misaligned with a community standard of care and/or the midwife's professional recommendation. In such a circumstance, the client is agreeing to take on the risk and responsibility of such a decision. However, certain client decisions may create a level of risk and concern that is unacceptable to the midwife, in which case she will make every effort to facilitate a transfer of care to a provider who is able to best accommodate the client's individual needs.

Person-Centered Care

Caraballo Midwifery is dedicated to creating safe and inclusive spaces for all people without discrimination on the basis of racial or ethnic identity, gender-identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, or religion. Preferred gender pronouns, preferred anatomical references, sexual & reproductive health needs & inquiries will be respected, as will your personal, cultural, & religious needs & preferences related to your care.

Caraballo Midwifery strives to uplift the Buffalo & greater Buffalo community as a whole through providing compassionate, high-quality midwifery care to the individuals that make up the community and in doing so, we emphasize the need to acknowledge and respond to the stark & dismal perinatal health disparities in our community and in the nation as a whole that are driven by structural & interpersonal racism, xenophobia, homophobia, & the inequitable distribution of wealth & resources.

Family-Centered Care

We love caring for the whole family and invite you to bring along your loved ones & support people to your visits if you wish to do so. Even when family members aren’t present in the room, we are sensitive to the complexities of family & community relationships and how these dynamics may influence one’s spiritual, emotional, & physical needs throughout their course of care.

When caring for pregnant & postpartum individuals, we provide care with deep reverence for the pregnant person & baby as a dyad whose needs and well-being are interwoven. We seek to support and hold space for the inner-knowing held by pregnant & postpartum people to make informed decisions about their and their babies’ needs. We also strive to listen to the babies that we care for and to treat them with loving respect and humility, for we never ceased to be awed by their incredible ability to communicate without words and to receive just what they need when heard.
